That’s why we make it a priority to stay up to date on the latest training and equip ourselves with top-of-the-line technology to properly care for our patients and protect our community.

Who Is The Creve Coeur Fire Protection District?

In 1943, seven public-spirited men established the Creve Coeur Fire Department. They recognized the area’s need for a fire department and completed a firefighting course the Office of Civil Defense sponsored. The first fire station for Creve Coeur was located in the basement of the Dierberg’s Store, and the first “fire engine” was a 1933 Chevrolet, equipped with a government-issued Willy’s water pump and 1000 feet of hose.

The Creve Coeur Volunteer Fire Associates formed later in the spring of 1944. Volunteers participated in weekly in-service training on Sunday mornings and raised funds for the department by holding fish fries, local carnivals, and selling fire tags to homeowners and local businesses.

As the community grew and the population increased, the need for an organized fire district with set boundaries became apparent. So, on December 16, 1958, it was put before the people to vote in favor of or against the incorporation of a fire district—which was subsequently approved. The Volunteer Associates provided financing for the newly formed District until tax funds could be received. In 1959, the Creve Coeur Fire Protection District appointed its first full-time Fire Chief, Robert E. Mertz.

The Creve Coeur Fire Protection District is currently ranked as a “Class Three” fire insurance district, which is among the lowest rates presently in St. Louis County. The District provides essential fire protection and emergency medical services to the residents of Creve Coeur, Maryland Heights, the Village of Westwood, and the unincorporated areas surrounding these two cities, protecting a population of approximately 40,000 people and an area of 26 square miles.
