At Creve Coeur Fire Protection District, we prioritize ensuring that our team can effectively manage complex rescue operations, reduce risk to themselves and our residents, and save lives throughout the district.

What Is Heavy Rescue?

The term “heavy rescue” refers to a specialized emergency response designed for complex and high-risk emergency situations that exceed the limits of standard firefighting or medical care. The Creve Coeur Fire Protection District, as part of the St. Louis Metro USAR team, provides heavy rescue services for a variety of emergency situations, including:

  • Structural collapses

  • Confined space rescue

Heavy rescue operations require specially trained personnel familiar with the necessary tools and techniques required to safely remove patients, stabilize hazardous situations, and minimize the risk to themselves, their patients, and property. We train our heavy rescue personnel in various heavy rescue techniques, such as:

  • Trench rescue

  • Rope rescue

  • High-angle rescue

  • Vehicle extraction

This broad range of essential rescue skills makes us adaptable to a variety of complex emergency scenarios. Plus, with our prioritization of utilizing only state-of-the-art rescue equipment and conducting consistent rescue training, the Creve Coeur Fire Protection District is a trusted provider of life-saving heavy rescue services throughout the community.

What Is The Difference?: Fire Department Heavy Rescue Vs. EMS Response

People often see overlap in the services of heavy rescue and emergency medical services. However, there are a few key differences between the two of them. Standard EMS responses are purely patient-focused, concentrating primarily on providing essential prehospital medical care and patient transport, whereas heavy rescue services are more technical, focusing on safely extricating patients from dangerous environments like a collapsed building or a flipped vehicle.

While it’s true that both essential services focus on saving lives, how they function to reach that goal is distinctly different. Our personnel are cross-trained to operate in both capacities, ensuring seamless, coordinated care from rescue to medical treatment.
